After the recent success of ‘State of Mind’ and ‘Urban Wilderness (Reimagined)’, which have seen over 100,000 streams across platforms to date, EMERGER kicks off the new year with ‘Round We Go’. Strong allusions to 80s synth-pop hint towards their forthcoming album’s sound and the next exciting chapter of their careers.
Of the track, Matthee says: “We wrote this song for all the creators out there. ‘Round We Go’ revolves around the artist’s raison d’être, which is to create. The lyrics play with the idea that an artist’s relationship with his/her art can be similar to the ebb and flow of a romantic relationship. The song chronicles the creative process and all of its intricacies. Everything involved with the creation of a work of art has so many layers of complexities, which we feel a lot of people have taken for granted.” Matthee produced the track from the duo’s home studio in Cape Town.
The video for ‘Round We Go’ is also out today and is directed by De Goede, who had a clear vision for the video. “Being immersed within a tank of thousands of lights, the video portrays how the creative process can be all-encompassing. We knew from the start we wanted to establish a cinematic experience. Our friend, Goddy Roodt, owner of Polycat animation and visual effects studio, exhibited his Light Tank art installation at the 99 Loop Gallery, which was the perfect setting to shoot the music video for ‘Round We Go’,” said De Goede. She then recruited the cinematic touches of cinematographer, Hugo Brand, who had previously worked on music videos for South African stalwarts, including Francois van Coke and Die Heuwels Fantasties.
EMERGER has various live performance videos that will accompany the single, including a virtual live performance at the Andrson Uploaded International Songwriting Competition’s grand finale event on 18 February. As the judges’ choice, the duo recently made it to the Dublin-based company’s top 10. Being selected out of 3000 artists, with their single ‘State of Mind’, they stand a chance to win €10,000 as part of the Grand Prize.
Since releasing their debut EP, ‘Bloom’, in 2018, EMERGER have been making waves both nationally and internationally. Apple Music showcased the duo as their New Artist Spotlight of July 2018, featuring their songs on prominent editorial playlists, including ‘Apple Music’s Best of 2018’ playlist. Two of their songs, ‘Hindsight’ and ‘Nomadic Love’, have been played on BBC Radio and featured as part of the BBC Introducing show. Their debut single ‘Break & Fall’ was a winner of the Avid and Abbey Road Studios International Song Contest, chosen from 5000 entries across the globe.
